Orthodontics Q&A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontic services are treatments for your teeth that adjust their positions. Straight, well-aligned teeth not only look great, but they are also easier to clean.

At Bay View Dental, the team specializes in phase I and phase II orthodontics. Phase I orthodontics, or interceptive orthodontics, involves treatments between the ages of six and nine years when a child’s smile is still developing.

Your dentist performs digital scans and 3D X-rays to gain a comprehensive understanding of their needs. As your child’s jaw continues to grow, your dentist can take advantage of this period with treatments like spacers and palatal expanders.

This can help avoid complex treatments like jaw surgery in the future and reduce their time with future braces or aligners.

Phase II orthodontics may include braces, retainers, extractions, or restorations like dental crowns.

Which issues can orthodontics address?

Orthodontics can address numerous issues with the way your teeth are aligned or positioned. You should consider orthodontic treatments for yourself or for your child to treat:

  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Crowding
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crossbite
  • Asymmetrical teeth

Some early signs of the possible need for orthodontics in the future include thumb or finger sucking or an injury to the teeth or the bones of the face.

What are my options for orthodontic treatments?

Bay View Dental offers orthodontic treatments for people of all ages. The team helps you review both options and choose the one that can correct your alignment successfully. Your options include:

Traditional braces

Traditional braces include one wire bracket per tooth plus wires that run through each bracket on your upper and lower arch. They may also require the use of rubber bands. Together, the braces system gradually places pressure on your teeth to adjust their positions over time. You’ll come in for regular visits throughout the process so your dentist can tighten them.

Invisalign®

Invisalign is a modern alternative to braces. Instead of using metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a custom series of clear plastic alignment devices. Each device pushes your teeth slightly toward their aligned position. With digital planning, you can preview your results before you start treatment.
